If you think this is the best beach in the Dunes Lakeshore, do yourself a favor and go to Central Beach.
As close to an ocean as you can get to in the Midwest. Call ahead to check for any undertow or bacteria warnings. Enjoy the workout of climbing the dunes to get awesome views of the lakeshore and a glimpse of downtown Chicago on a clear day.
Beautiful!! Cute little place to walk around and wonderful beach. Be careful though, they will close the beach due to high tide if you want to go swimming, be sure to check first!!
The line for the park has no organization to it. There is a small lot right by the beach, but the bigger ones are a lot farther away. There is also strict rules for the lake. There's no going past the markers which were only about four feet deep when I was there.
I found the park itself to be beautiful, but we got robbed in the parking lot. It was easily one of the worst experiences of my life. Our car got smashed into and everything was stolen. They claimed they have cameras, however they didn't get a good visual on the guy who robbed us and a few other cars. They claim crime happens often due to the proximity of "Gary". The park is great, however beware of the crime. I spoke with a park ranger and it happens more often than not in this area. If you prefer a safer setting, head up shore toward Kemil Beach. Anything past the Burns Harbor area (east) is going to be safer than this place.
